Guilt free, sugar free hot chocolate recipe

“Hot chocolate is like a hug from the inside” – Violet Sueno

As the temperatures drop I know I’m not the only one reaching for a toasty and sweet drink to warm myself up. This past month I went through a phase of having a cup of hot chocolate nearly everyday. It’s the perfect thing to snuggle into bed and do homework with (or more realistically watch Netflix with). Typically I’m not one to count calories or really restrict myself from eating what I want…but something told me all that sugar and processed ingredients in the instant hot coco wasn’t the healthiest option I could opt for, especially not on the everyday basis. Seriously though, check out the ingredients on instant hot chocolate and tell me it’s not a little concerning.

So I did my research on viable healthy hot chocolate options and came up with the easiest, healthiest, yummiest, sugar free hot coco in all of the land!!! Satisfy your holiday sweet tooth with three ingredients and zero sugar. You’re welcome 🙂

Ingredients: Unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, and stevia. That’s it.

Directions: Heat almond milk over the stove until it comes to a rolling boil. Add 1-2 tablespoons of cocoa powder for every 1 cup of almond milk. Once cocoa powder is mixed in completely, add stevia to taste. For reference, 1 cup of regular sugar is equivalent to 2-3 teaspoons of stevia.

Calories: For one cup of coco with 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder the not-so-whopping total comes out to be 50 calories! (Not including marshmallows and candy canes)

Disclaimer: Marshmallows and candy cane pictured do indeed contain sugar. Treat yo’ self.

ADULT 21+ OPTION: If you want to mix in some guilt to your guilt-free hot chocolate, add candy canes and peppermint schnapps as desired. Definitely not the healthiest option, but possibly the most fun. Drink responsibly!

Lastly, let’s not forget that cozying up with hot beverages is most enjoyable with companions by our side. I tried out this recipe in the company of my closest friends and Justin Bieber’s Christmas album…on repeat. Regardless of what you’re eating, drinking, or listening to, what really matters is the people you surround yourself with. Wouldn’t trade these goofy, beautiful, warm-hearted humans for anything in the world. Not even hot chocolate.
